When people think of building a custom home, their minds usually jump to kitchens, paint colors, and maybe the frame of a house going up against the skyline. But before any of that comes to life, there’s one stage that sets the tone for everything else: the foundation.
At New Peak Homes, we like to say that the foundation is where your future meets the earth. It's the part of the process you don’t always see in glossy home tours—but it’s the most important for long-term stability, safety, and peace of mind. Let’s take a closer look at what really happens in the foundation phase of your custom home build.
1. Footings Are the First Step to your custom home foundation
Before we pour a foundation slab or build basement walls, we install footings—a critical structural element that distributes the weight of your home evenly into the ground. In areas like Driggs, Victor, and surrounding Eastern Idaho communities, where frost depth and soil conditions vary, this isn’t a step we rush. Proper footings are the quiet champions of every well-built home.

2. We Build the Forms for Your Foundation Walls
Once the footings are cured, our team begins constructing foundation forms—the molds that shape the concrete walls of your home. Whether you’re getting a full basement, crawl space, or slab-on-grade foundation, this step determines the literal footprint of your home. It’s precision work, and our team treats it that way.

3. Concrete Pour Day: A Big Milestone
After the forms are ready and reinforced with steel rebar, we pour the concrete. Timing matters here—everything from the weather to the mix affects the final product. Once poured, the concrete needs time to cure, which helps prevent cracks and ensures strength. This is one of the most physically demanding and detail-driven steps of the build, and we monitor it closely to get it just right.
4. Waterproofing and Drainage Protection Come Next
The foundation doesn’t just hold your home up—it also keeps moisture out. After the concrete cures, we apply waterproofing material to the exterior of the foundation walls and install drainage systems to protect against ground moisture. It’s not a flashy part of the build, but in our climate, it’s a must.

5. Backfill and Site Restoration
Once everything is dry, inspected, and sealed, it’s time to backfill. This means replacing the soil around the foundation to secure it in place and prepare the site for framing. At this point, your lot will start to look like a job site again—but in the best way. Your future home is officially taking shape.

6. Inspection and Engineering Sign-Off
Before we move on, we go through the first official inspection process. Local inspectors and structural engineers confirm that everything is built to code, from the footings to the walls to drainage. It’s a moment of reassurance—for us and for you—that we’re off to the right start.

7. You Can Walk Your Footprint
With the foundation complete, you can finally stand on the site and walk the outline of your future home. It’s one of our favorite moments with clients—when the plans on paper start to feel real. You’ll be able to visualize where your kitchen will be, where the living room will sit, and how it all connects to the land you’ve chosen.

Building a Foundation Means Building Confidence
At New Peak Homes, we treat every step of the foundation phase with care and craftsmanship. Because we know that what lies beneath is just as important as what’s to come.
